UMD Engineering students will have an innovative new space for classes, labs, collaboration and more in the Stanley R. Zupnik Hall. On November 10, a ceremonial groundbreaking was held for the building that will be home to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering along with the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Quantum Technology Center.

More than an advanced space for education, Zupnik Hall will also be an advanced example of energy use. According to Bill Olen, Executive Director of FM’s Planning and Construction unit, “The intent is that the building be operationally net carbon zero, the first one on the UMD campus." Energy use intensity for Zupnik Hall will be best in class for this building type and will also help the Chemistry Wing project dramatically reduce its carbon footprint.

Zupnik Hall joins the E. A. Fernandez IDEA Factory and the Southern Maryland Autonomous Research Technology (SMART) building in encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration among engineering disciplines.

The new building is named for UMD alum Stanley R. Zupnik ‘59, who contributed to the project.
