As part of Facilities Management's ongoing commitment to supporting the professional growth of its diverse workforce, FM launched a new Computer Literacy Training Program Pilot earlier this month. The pilot, developed in collaboration with the University of Maryland Extension's Tech Extension program, addresses a growing need for basic computer skills among FM staff.
Recent data underscores the importance of this initiative. Approximately 20% of FM’s 850 employees speak English as a second language, while more than 30% spend the majority of their workday away from computers. Additionally, a survey conducted earlier this year revealed that 70% of respondents had never participated in formal computer training. As FM prepares to roll out new software like Workday and AssetWorks, the necessity for improved digital literacy has never been clearer.
The pilot program includes 20 staff members from the B&LM, OM&U, and FBO units, selected by their supervisors as strong candidates for the training. Participants will gain hands-on experience using iPhones and iPads, learning essential skills such as connecting to Wi-Fi, logging into email, navigating a web browser, and authenticating to the university’s CAS system. These practical skills will enhance their ability to communicate, collaborate, and perform their job duties more effectively.
By the end of the course, employees will not only be better equipped to use technology in their roles but will also develop a more adaptable mindset, positioning them to embrace future changes. Once the pilot is complete, FM plans to expand the program to all units, further supporting its mission to invest in the professional development of its team.
