The Wheels Off Walkways (WOW) program officially relaunched on Monday, August 21 just in time for the start of the fall semester. Cones and sandwich signs created to support the program were distributed with the goal of helping keep pedestrians safe and informed regarding work that impacts campus walkways.
The WOW Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was created with input from across FM as well as UMD’s ADA office. Obstructing sidewalks with parked vehicles or equipment can cause significant barriers to mobility. In addition, blocking accessible walkways can result in individuals with disabilities having to navigate onto the street, which is not only dangerous but also violates their rights to equal access.
It may be too early to tell how WOW efforts are impacting FM staff behavior, but everyone is encouraged to pitch in and help make a difference. If you drive an FM vehicle, park smart and keep vehicles off walkways except when unavoidable. And if you see a car parked in a crosswalk or curb cut, or otherwise creating a dangerous situation, speak up to encourage better practices.
New! In addition to signage, laminated parking Dos & Don’ts flyers, intended to be kept in vehicles, will be available for pickup in the warehouse beginning October 13.
If you have questions about WOW, please ask your supervisor.
