Announcing FM’s New Executive Director of OM&U
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Rob Hermstein as FM’s new Executive Director of Operations, Maintenance & Utilities (OM&U), effective November 30, 2025.
The Executive Director of OM&U oversees operations, maintenance, repair, utilities distribution, and minor renovations for more than 14 million square feet of campus facilities. The position manages a $25 million operating budget and a $35 million facility renewal budget, and also provides oversight of the NextGen Energy Program, including the privatization of the central cogeneration plant, electric, and steam systems.
Rob has served as Interim Executive Director since October 2024, leading a team of skilled tradespeople, engineers, and technical staff in support of the university’s facilities and utilities. With more than 25 years of experience in operations, engineering, and energy systems across higher education and the private sector, he brings both technical expertise and a proven record of leadership.
Since joining FM in 2011, Rob has advanced through a series of leadership positions, including deputy director of OM&U and assistant director of Engineering Services. He is a licensed professional engineer and LEED-accredited professional, with an MBA from the University of Maryland Global Campus and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from SUNY Maritime College.
Please join me in congratulating Rob on his appointment and in supporting him as he continues to lead OM&U forward. Rob can be reached at rhermste@umd.edu.
