Subject: New Assistant Director Utilities & Energy Management

Good Afternoon Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Gregg Garbesi for the position of Assistant Director, Utilities & Energy Management, effective October 11.

The AD Utilities & Energy Management is an important position responsible for managing the financial, operational, and compliance oversight of the university’s energy program. Three sub-units report to this position — Plant Operations, Utilities Business Services, and Energy Management. Major areas of responsibilities include oversight of plant operations and contract compliance, utility invoice processing and auxiliary billing, and commodities purchasing and energy management programs.

Gregg brings considerable experience in the energy environment and specific experience with our systems here at UMD. He served in the Navy from 1986 to 2000 and has held positions in energy management since that time, most recently with Vicinity Energy in Baltimore as Engineering and Maintenance Manager. He has also held positions at Ohio State University, and some of you may remember Gregg from his time here at UMD from 2013-2017 when he served as our Plant Manager.

Gregg earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis and holds two master’s degrees – International Policy Studies from Stanford University and National Security Studies from Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama.

Gregg will be a great addition to the E&E team as the university plots its course for our energy future. Please join me in congratulating Gregg and welcoming him back to UMD and Facilities Management.

Sincerely,

Bob
