Campus Creek: Another Step Toward Restoration

June 2025 Update

Creek

In 2023, UMD received $1.7 million in funding from a Maryland Department of Natural Resources grant to continue work on the Campus Creek Restoration Project. FM’s Planning & Construction team has played a key role in this transformative effort, which aims to reduce pollutants, improve water quality, and restore aquatic habitats within the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Another step in the restoration of Campus Creek will be completed this summer. In Phase 1, nearly 3,000 feet of the creek were restored. Phase 2 - Segment 1 began last year with an additional 2,300 feet completed. This summer, Phase 2 - Segment 2A & 2B - will complete restoration from Regents Drive to Paint Branch Drive. The implementation of the final Phase 2 - Segment 3 restoration from Paint Branch to the tributary of the Anacostia River is dependent on funding availability.

The restoration process includes clearing debris, restoring the banks, culvert installation to manage stormwater, new plantings, and general beautification along the banks. Already, the project has supported the return of fish, toads, and other wildlife to Campus Creek.
