Your UMD Building & Workspace

Facilities Management Info & Resources Your UMD Building & Workspace

Welcome to Your Space

Whether you're new to UMD, moving into a newly constructed building, renovated suite, or refreshed workspace, we're excited to welcome you. While every building is unique, the information below will help you get settled and understand how campus facilities operate.

Questions or Issues? Contact Your Academic Facilities Officer (AFO)

Each college, school, and academic unit has an Academic Facilities Officer (AFO) or designated facilities representative who serves as the primary point of contact for facility-related questions, service requests, and support. If you're unsure who to contact, start with your AFO. Your AFO works closely with Facilities Management and can help coordinate a variety of building and space-related needs, including:

  • Building and room access
  • Furniture and workspace requests
  • Signage and wayfinding
  • Maintenance and service concerns
  • Renovation and space-related questions
  • Building-specific information and resources

Building Essentials

Explore the topics below to learn more about the services, systems, and resources that support UMD buildings and workspaces.

Building Access and Security

Property

Most campus buildings use card access systems to help maintain a safe and secure environment. Access permissions may vary by building, department, or space. If you need access to a building, office, laboratory, or other secured area, contact your department's Academic Facilities Officer (AFO) or designated building representative. Additional information about building security systems and access technologies is available on the University Police website.

Temperature and Comfort

University buildings are designed to provide a comfortable environment while balancing energy efficiency and sustainability goals.

Heating, cooling, and ventilation systems may operate differently depending on the age, design, and function of the building. Temperature settings are managed centrally and may vary during evenings, weekends, holidays, and other periods when buildings are unoccupied.

If you experience ongoing comfort concerns, contact your Academic Facilities Officer or submit a service request through Facilities Management.

Lighting and Energy-Saving Features

lighting

Many newer and renovated buildings include energy-saving technologies that help reduce campus energy use.

You may notice:

  • Occupancy sensors that automatically turn lights off when spaces are vacant
  • Daylight-responsive lighting controls
  • Energy-saving electrical outlets that switch off when not in use

Building-specific instructions for lighting controls and other energy-saving features will be provided where applicable.

Housekeeping and Recycling

housekeeping

Facilities Management provides housekeeping services that support a clean, healthy, and sustainable campus environment.

Recycling and waste collection services are available throughout campus. If your area requires additional recycling, compost, or waste containers, contact your Academic Facilities Officer. Research and laboratory spaces may have additional housekeeping requirements to ensure safe access and compliance with university safety procedures.
