Elevator Outages: What You Need to Know

Facilities Management About FM News Elevator Outages: What You Need to Know
elevator

How many elevators are there at UMD College Park?
There are 262 vertical transportation units throughout the campus.

How common are elevator outages?
On average, we receive three or four trouble calls per day for an elevator not responding when school is in session. Most issues are resolved within an hour, and the elevator is placed back into service.

Is there a single cause that is frequently to blame for elevator outages?
The most common issue is related to the operation of the door - the door mechanism may be out of adjustment, dirt or debris could be disturbing the door track, the door sensing system could be malfunctioning or obstructed. During thunderstorms, power disturbances can cause other problems for elevators.

What factors can affect the smooth operation of elevators?
Extreme temperatures can impact operation. Hydraulic oil thickens during excessive cold snaps, causing erratic operation. High heat can also cause erratic operation. Elevators sitting unused for an extended period of time, such as during the summer break, can cause less smooth operation when first put back into use. Elevators like to be used.

What can building occupants expect during an elevator outage?
For extended outages, an outage notice is sent out to all building occupants notifying them of the issue. In buildings that have multiple elevators, the UMD community will be directed to other units still in operation. Signs are also posted on the affected elevator at each floor with contact info for any issues/questions.

What should you do if you require an elevator for access that is out of commission?
Contact the number provided on the outage notice, and we will do everything possible to get someone where they need to go. There are occasions where an elevator is taken out of service but can be run for very specific needs.

How are updates shared during an elevator outage?
We send detailed outage notices that include links to additional information, including a map detailing elevator locations.

How often is routine maintenance performed on elevators?
Routine maintenance is performed monthly. Documentation of maintenance is required and reviewed to pass the Maryland State elevator inspection.
