Thomas “Tom” Carroll joined the University of Maryland on September 8 as Associate Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer, bringing more than 35 years of leadership experience in higher education, federal government, and military operations.
Tom comes to UMD from Columbia University, where he led comprehensive facilities operations for the Manhattanville Campus development beginning in 2021. He also oversaw fire safety operations and compliance programs across all Columbia campuses.
Before joining Columbia, Tom spent more than a decade in senior leadership positions with the Architect of the Capitol. Earlier in his career, he served for 20 years as a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Tom holds a master’s degree in Administration/Organizational Behavior from Central Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Vermont.
